A complete blood count (CBC) test is the name for a series of blood tests.  These tests are frequently done together in connection with medical physicals.  It often provides information that will be used by the medical doctor to order additional blood tests.  It is ordered when the patient is complaining about (presenting):


Being fatigued

Feeling weak

Feeling tired

Bruising more easily than normal

Unexpected weight loss

Feeling generally ill

An allergy

Symptoms of asthma

The CBC will show:


The number of red blood cells

The number of white blood cells

The total amount of hemoglobin (hemo=blood, globin=type of protein)

The percentage of hemoglobin concentration in red blood cells

The platelet count

The percentage of red blood cells in the blood
The approximate size of the red blood cells
